What is the 30 Hour Famine?
Students around the world loving God and fighting hunger.
You will grow closer to Christ and one another as you fast for 30 hours together. You'll become part of something bigger than yourself. You'll take action for God’s kingdom and save the lives of hungry kids worldwide.
How the Famine works
1. Sign up (click "join our team" at the top of the page).
2. Ask your family, friends, and teachers to donate before the event.
3. On the big day, eat a good lunch, then it's only juice for the next 30 hours.
4. Meet at church for 24 hours learning, prayer, service, and GAMES.
Why fast?
In the Bible, people fasted for a variety of reasons: as an act of worship (Acts 13:2), repentance (Nehemiah 9:1), or to discern the Lord’s will (2 Chronicles 20:3). Fasting as a part of the 30 Hour Famine helps students identify with the hungry children they’re helping and learn about hunger in a memorable way.
Is fasting safe?
Most people can safely go without solid food for 30 hours... and the juice helps a lot. In order to attend the First English Famine, you must be 12 or older but you don't have to fast from food. People who cannot fast for medical reasons can still come! See below.
So, it's just juice?
Yes, the traditional 30 Hour Famine fast means only juice and water for 30 hours. We strongly recommend 100% juice and nothing too acidic. Classic apple juice is a great choice, even if you don't drink it normally. One gallon per person should be plenty!
What if I have to eat food?
If you cannot fast for medical reasons (or are nervous for your first Famine) you can bring snacks or meals to store in our kitchen. You can discreetly consume them during breaks and no one else need know. Maybe you'll only eat peanut butter sandwiches, or only vegetables, or only rice during the Famine. If you have any questions, please speak with Renata!
What about the service project?
We aim to fight hunger worldwide, including right here at home! This year we are partnering with Cass Community Social Services. Located on Rosa Parks in Detroit, they are dedicated to making a life-changing difference by providing for basic needs, promoting self-reliance, and encouraging community involvement.
